Who is driving

Washington’s Department of Licensing sets the requirements for limousine chauffeurs. A chauffeur must be at least 21, hold a valid Washington driver license with a satisfactory driving record, pass a Washington State Patrol background check, carry a medical certificate renewed every two years, take part in a random drug-testing program and complete a National Safety Council defensive driving course. Our chauffeurs are licensed, background-checked and trained in defensive driving.

Who stands behind the vehicle

A limousine company needs a state limousine carrier license and a certificate for each vehicle, and must file proof of at least $1,050,000 in combined single-limit liability insurance. You can check a Washington business license and its status with the DOL license lookup before you book with anyone.

A record of the trip

Limousine trips in Washington must be prearranged, and the chauffeur carries a passenger manifest listing the name and phone number of the person who booked, the pickup time, date and location, and the destination. When a parent makes the booking, that parent is the contact on record.

Washington law on underage drinking is direct. Under RCW 66.44.270, it is unlawful for anyone under 21 to possess, consume or otherwise acquire liquor, and unlawful for anyone to supply liquor to a person under 21. It is also unlawful for someone under 21 to be in a motor vehicle in a public place while showing the effects of having consumed liquor. Talk this through with your student and the other families before the night, and ask about the rules for your booking when you request a quote.

Why not have a student drive?

Washington’s intermediate license, for drivers aged 16 and 17, limits exactly the kind of driving prom involves. For the first six months, the driver may not carry any passengers under 20 who are not immediate family, and for the next six months no more than three. Intermediate drivers also may not drive between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless a licensed driver aged 25 or older is with them. A chauffeured ride keeps the whole group in one vehicle with a professional driver instead of several cars on the road late at night.

Head count and vehicle

Count everyone riding, dates included, before choosing a vehicle. The stretch limousine seats up to 10, the SUV limousine up to 14 and the party bus up to 30. If the group might grow, plan for the larger number.

One organizer, one plan

Pick one parent to book and be the contact. Agree on the pickup address, any photo or dinner stop, the dance venue and the drop-off at the end of the night, and put every stop in the plan before prom day. One pickup location for the whole group keeps the schedule simple.

Timing and school rules

Your school sets the date, and every other group from that school is booking for the same night. Request a quote as soon as the date and group are known. Check your school’s prom rules on arrival and leaving times before you set the pickup.

Photo stops

If the group wants photos away from home, choose a spot that allows them. The Seattle Japanese Garden, for example, prohibits prom and graduation photo shoots.

Graduation transportation is usually simpler than prom: the graduate and family to the ceremony, then on to a dinner or party. Ask the school or venue where cars should drop off and pick up after the ceremony, and include that in the booking.
